Booklicious: Win a Copy of A Walk in the Woods

This is what Michael and I did with our weekend. That, my friends, is a haul of 75 books, amassed during a couple of hours on Saturday morning. Each autumn, the Columbia Public Library in Columbia, Mo., holds a fabulous used-book sale with tens of thousands of volumes up for grabs, both library discards and clean donations. Needless to say, it's impossible to leave empty handed, and the library raises beaucoup bucks via the effort. I was very excited to add four new Daphne du Maurier titles to my collection — especially this one:

How could I resist? The author of Rebecca tarted up as a romance novelist? That book can't be anything but an amazing read. Michael apparently thought the same when he grabbed this specimen:

I don't even know what to say.

I also picked up something for one of you:

Bill Bryson is one of my favorite writers, and I firmly believe he should be foisted on everyone. A Walk in the Woods is a fantastic read, so if you're new to Bryson, you might as well start here. Here's Random House's synopsis of the book:

Back in America after twenty years in Britain, Bill Bryson decided to reacquaint himself with his native country by walking the 2,100-mile Appalachian Trail, which stretches from Georgia to Maine. The AT offers an astonishing landscape of silent forests and sparkling lakes--and to a writer with the comic genius of Bill Bryson, it also provides endless opportunities to witness the majestic silliness of his fellow human beings.

For a start there's the gloriously out-of-shape Stephen Katz, a buddy from Iowa along for the walk. Despite Katz's overwhelming desire to find cozy restaurants, he and Bryson eventually settle into their stride, and while on the trail they meet a bizarre assortment of hilarious characters. But A Walk in the Woods is more than just a laugh-out-loud hike. Bryson's acute eye is a wise witness to this beautiful but fragile trail, and as he tells its fascinating history, he makes a moving plea for the conservation of America's last great wilderness. An adventure, a comedy, and a celebration, A Walk in the Woods is destined to become a modern classic of travel literature.

Entered! Thanks so much!

That haul is CRAZY! I wish we had something like that happening around here. I love that du Maurier edition! And I can't believe you even got Room. You must have arrived there as soon as it started!

This sale is a get-up-at-5:30-to-drive-over-an-hour-and-queue-for-another-hour kind of event. Some people run through the library to get to the books. You head to your favorite section and just start grabbing, because otherwise the bookstore owners with their damnable barcode scanners will swoop in. Paperbacks are 50 cents, hardbacks $1, with more collectible/desirable titles set aside and marked for a bit more (Room was a hefty $2). This is always the highlight of my autumn.
